Lake Crescent, the Chinese oasis in the desert

Somewhere 6 km from the city of Dunhuang in western China is Lake Crescent - an incredible oasis in the Gobi desert. The Chinese language is called Yueyuyuan. The crescent-shaped lake is the most important landmark in the region where one of the largest Buddhist temples in the world is located.
This lake has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, but since the 70's it has become shallower and is now only a third of its original size.
Only in the last 30 years the lake has dropped by 7.6 meters.
Lately, however, local authorities have begun to take measures to maintain this site and restore the depth of the lake to previous levels.
Today, the ancient city of Dunhuang, which serves as the gateway to the West, is threatened by modern requirements.
Population growth and the dam, built 30 years ago to support local peasants, have strongly influenced the already fragile ecosystem in the desert, which has been stable for thousands of years.
With more and more people arriving in the region, the groundwater level, the main source of local drinking water, has begun to fall.
We hope the lake will not dry out and future generations will be able to admire it.
